An ulpan (meaning "studio" in Hebrew) is an Intensive Hebrew Immersion Program that exchange and international students must take before attending a university or an organization. At BGU, there is a four week uplan requirement during the Summer. In these classes, students engage in hands on language learning, activities, and field trips that help build competency in the language. Students are housed in a dormitory where monolingual Hebrew speakers and English speakers may live in the same appartments, getting exposed to language on a daily basis.
Currently, an ulpan costs 2,250 dollars. This may seem like a lot of money; however, it can prove immensely useful for those who want to become fluent in Hebrew. Some ulpans can be as long as a semester, or even a year, depending on one's target proficiency.
